Fried green tomatoes are a beloved Southern classic that brings a touch of rustic charm to any dining table. With their golden, crisp exterior and tender, tangy insides, each bite is a savory reminder of sun-drenched gardens and warm hospitality.
Step 1: Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds and soak them in buttermilk for at least 10 minutes to enhance flavor and tenderness.
Step 2: In a shallow dish, combine cornmeal, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper, mixing well.
Step 3: Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Remove the tomatoes from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge each slice in the cornmeal mixture, pressing lightly to adhere.
Step 4: Carefully place the coated tomatoes in the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Serve with a zesty remoulade sauce for dipping.
Pair with a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc.
